Project
Etiquette at Work
This eLearning project was developed for a small company to improve workplace etiquette among warehouse and construction workers.
-
Audience: Warehouse and construction workers who are Spanish-speaking and have little to no formal education. Most of the workers are illiterate.
-
Responsibilities: Front-end Analysis, eLearning Development, Evaluation Plan
-
Tools Used: Articulate Storyline 360, Articulate Rise 360, Voice Control for ChatGPT
Problem & Solution
Many employees of this small company are unaware of professional U.S. based behavior and are behaving in ways that are considered unprofessional, inappropriate, and in some instances, considered sexual harassment. This has resulted in complaints from clients. To keep its clients, this company needs its employees to acculturate to the U.S. culture of employee workplace behavior.
Increasing knowledge of appropriate professional behavior will be key in changing behavior. The goal for improvement is to increase knowledge in the areas of greetings, observing personal space, and avoiding personal conversations. This will be achieved by developing and implementing an eLearning for employees to learn about expectations in the workplace.
Design
I chose Gagne's Nine Events of Instruction as the organizational strategy for this project because of its systematic, logical, and design approach to help learners understand and retain information. For example, I stated the learning objectives in the introduction and then presented a scenario to grab the learners' attention.
Several delivery strategies were used to motivate learners and to create content in a way that they could learn, including the ARCS Model of Motivation, chunking, and scenarios.
Script and Storyboard
Once created, the storyboards were sent to the client for feedback and approval. After suggested revisions, the script was translated into Spanish using ChatGPT.
Development
The eLearning was developed with Articulate Rise 360 due to its responsiveness and built-in course outlines while Articulate Storyline 360 was used to obtain some character images and create scenarios, which were then embedded into Rise. Storyline was used to develop the scenarios because audio is available in each scene whereas in Rise, audio is only available in the introductory scene. Learners would be expected to read subsequent scenes and the learners in this target population either have no formal education or a low level of education meaning most, if not all, are illiterate. Voice Control for ChatGPT was used to narrate the eLearning in Spanish.
Evaluation
Due to time constraints, an evaluation wasn't completed for this project, however, an evaluation plan was given to the client to use after implementation. The evaluation plan was based on Kirkpatrick's Four-Level Evaluation Model. I recommended small-group evaluation by having 5 employees, who speak Spanish only, participate in a one-group pretest-posttest design of the eLearning. In this project, the pretest and posttest would have been conducted by interviews due to the education level of the target population preventing written tests. Information gleaned from the pretest and posttest would provide data on how the employees reacted to the training (Level 1) and measure how much they learned (Level 2). Observation by management of any behavioral changes would determine whether the employees transferred knowledge and skills to their work environment (Level 3). To measure the impact (Level 4) of the training, human resources records would be analyzed to determine whether there was a reduction in disciplinary actions a year after training compared to the year before training. Clients would be interviewed to determine whether they are satisfied with employee behavior at 3-month intervals for a year.
Kirkpatrick's 4-Level Evaluation Model
Levels | Key Questions | Methods of Evaluation |
---|---|---|
Level 1. Reaction | To what extent were employees satisfied with the training? | Interviews of employees |
Level 2. Learning | What knowledge and skills did the employees gain due to training? | Embedded Knowledge Checks |
Level 3. Behavior | Did the employees transfer knowledge and skills to their work environment? | Observations by Managers |
Level 4. Impact | Did complaints of employees demonstrating inappropriate behavior decrease? Are clients satisfied with employee behavior? | Archival data–HR records;
Interviews of clients
